We can extract and link data from multiple sources and disciplines, whether publicly available or proprietary, and make this data available to our customers. This massively linked dataset is then channelled through the right interface where it is vital in making the best decisions, successfully getting a drug to market and ensuring patient safety.

Elsevier Technology Services is now seeking a Data Discovery and Enrichment Expert with a penchant for Semantic Modeling and more generally Knowledge Engineering.

This is an exciting role based in India working with a highly motivated and diverse team.Role Purpose:A core part of our project involves building large scale knowledge graphs that serve world-class applications in pharmaceutical drug discovery & development. It is an imperative that our knowledge graphs follow a representation scheme that ensures a smart and efficient exploitation of their content at scale.

The position will be focusing on Implementing knowledge acquisition solutions, modeling, exploitation of semantic data management solutions and programming. In particular, the Data Discovery and Enrichment Expert will be at the forefront of the knowledge representation efforts by suggesting and implementing modeling solutions that ensure the best processing and use of the data.

Responsibilities

  • Writing and reviewing portions of detailed specifications for the development of Knowledge Graphs and complex system components to ensure continuous improvement

  • Writing documentation to ensure that the Data Contracts, Models, Architecture and Microservices can easily be found, understood and reused by other teams in other workflows

  • Implementing development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews to align objectives

  • Collaborating with development teams and building Java Microservice to understand complex product requirements and translate them to innovative software designs

  • Mentoring less-senior software developers on development methodologies and optimization techniques to up skill their knowledge

  • Operating in an Agile environment to resolve technical issues and complete bug fixes while collaborating with key stakeholders

  • Collaborating with teams and stakeholders to seek feedback on priorities to help shape innovative solutions for complicated software challenges

  • Researching and assessing industry and technology advancements and developments to identify opportunities to advance our technical capabilities

Key Skills

  • Expert knowledge of knowledge engineering techniques and technologies, semantic modeling, semantic data integration, ontology engineering, etc.

  • Good command of Semantic Web Standards (e.g. SHACL, RDF(S), OWL, SPARQL, JSON-LD) and other W3C standards.

  • Knowledge of Semantic Api e.g. Jena

  • Be an excellent Java developer with experience working with Java 8 or Java 11, and writing efficient, DRY, code. Scala a plus, other languages can be considered e.g. Python

  • Have experience of working in an Agile environment and proactively investigating and solving complex problems

  • Have in-depth knowledge of AWS (or other Cloud provider - we use AWS) and REST

  • Be a natural communicator, able to engage and influence stakeholders and present technical content to a range of audiences

  • Have the ability to write and review detailed specifications for the development of complex system components or Data Models and Contracts

  • Some familiarity with the current trends in Big Data Architecture: Kafka, Spark, Hadoop, Distributed Systems, Parallel Processing Frameworks, Stream / Batch Processing

  • Have experience of test-driven development and the ability to complete complex bug fixes

  • Working knowledge of the life sciences and/or chemistry domain

  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence (Knowledge Representation), Computer Science, or a related field. Bachelor Degree could also be considered depending on the profile and experience, as would an advanced degree in an appropriate scientific domain such as molecular biology or pharmacology.
