In support of our portfolio of 2700+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes, and fostering equitable participation in publishing.

About the Role

Cell Press is looking for a future leader to help us take iScience, an exciting broad scope open access journal publishing in the life, physical, health, earth and social sciences, to the next level.

We are seeking to add a dynamic and enthusiastic Deputy Editor who shares our vision for bringing interdisciplinary communities together, and for helping scientists publish their work in a straightforward and timely way.

Responsibilities

  • Helping the Lead Editors to manage an expanding team

  • Directly managing a group of editors in the Physical Sciences

  • Developing journal strategy and its implementation.

  • Assessing submitted research papers

  • Overseeing the peer review process for direct submissions and transferred contributions

  • Establishing relationships with researchers

  • Recruiting exciting research papers for submission to iScience

  • Commissioning review content and Special Issues

  • Representing the journal and Cell Press at scientific meetings, and visit research institutions

  • Working collaboratively with academic editorial board members and editors

  • Building effective working relationships with colleagues across Cell Press and beyond

Requirements

  • PhD in a Physical Science discipline is a must.

  • A minimum of 4 years previous editorial experience is also a must.

  • Applicants with a professional background such as running a research group or working in industry are also encouraged.

  • Previous management experience is desirable but not required. However, candidates will be required to show aptitude towards being people leaders.

  • Broad scientific interests, a desire to learn, and the ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues. As a scientific editor, you will need to develop an understanding of the diverse areas covered by the journal, as well as be open to exciting emerging topics.

  • Great interpersonal skills. Collaboration and networking are core aspects of the job.

  • Strong ability to communicate clearly.

  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and focus.

  • Creativity, willingness to experiment, and desire to improve.

  • The ability to work well in a team.
